Finally, I’ve got something to contribute to the Iron Craft!

I’ve been following each weekly challenge, and I even made one, but since I couldn’t get it posted by the Wednesday post date, I didn’t contribute it.  This week, I still missed the Wednesday deadline, but I decided to post it anyway since I liked my completed project.  Hopefully it will get placed in the roundup at Iron Craft.

I wanted to show you this craft anyway, since it’s a great one to do with kids.  It’s so easy, and you end up with a really funky, cool product.

Essentially, you take a piece of sandpaper– coarser is usually better– and you draw on it with crayons.  Then you iron it onto a t-shirt.  What you end up with is a pebbly, textured image.  It looks fantastic with kids’ drawings.

The theme for this week’s Iron Craft challenge was “Hometown.”  So I decided to make a t-shirt from my old hometown high school, Ridgewood High.  We were the Maroons… isn’t that a random mascot?  Colors were maroon and white.

I bought a nice cotton tee in light gray from Gap, and I used a varsity-lettering-looking font to print out a big R.  I used the R as a template to draw on the sandpaper, and then I ironed it onto the tee.  After that, I used my Silhouette and the new iron-on vinyl I ordered and cut out the word “Maroons” in white typeface.  I ironed that on the t-shirt below the R, and here’s what I got:

I thought it was totally cute.

Here’s a close up so you can see the pebbling:

And I hope you will enjoy the stop motion video of me making the crayon design.

Did you like the music again?

Yay! You’re linked up over on Iron Craft. This is really cool! Now, why the sandpaper, purely because of the pebbly texture? I really like the result.

And the video, AWESOMEBALLS! I loved it when the camera followed you down the hall. Production!!!

Yeah, the sandpaper is just for the pebbling. Yay, I’m glad you likes the video! I did it all by myself, too. Amazing what you can do with a tripod & a remote!

The video is amazing! And I love this technique — your shirt looks great. Is it permanent? Any special washing instructions? LOVE the effect.

Really, the only special washing instructions I give are to wash in cold. I have several shirts the kids have made over the years that still look pristine. It’s definitely permanent. I think it makes a cool effect, too.

I can’t believe it’s permanent, and it really turned out looking fantastic. Also, your hair looks so much better in a ponytail than mine does … !

Excellent! I love the video, even without sound (at work, shh!). This is going on the ever-growing list of STUFF TO MAKE.

Your musical selections slay me. They’re unbelievably perfect.

I have too many t-shirts as it is, so I probably won’t make this one. But it’s a neat idea!

I’m so glad you like the musical selections. I got a little freaked with the viral video talk at Blissdom about the rights thing, so I found all this crazy royalty-free music. My kids were seriously blowing a gasket when I played that video for them, they were laughing so hard at the music.

What kind of crayon do you use? Is it a fabric crayon? Or just high quality Crayola because of the high pigment content in them?

Yeah, any crayon with good pigment works great.

I know this was over a year ago but I’m really curious, do you put this shirt in the dryer or just hang dry?
