Spoiler: I still love it!

I’ve so appreciated all the comments I’ve gotten from people about the new Sally Hansen gel nail manicure system. One sweet reader asked whether you could use other gel polishes from other companies with it, which I had never thought of but seems so brilliant. She tried it out and said it seemed to work well, so I decided to check it out for you, too.

I bought two other brand polishes: SensatioNail and Sephora’s gelshine (which is made by OPI). I gave myself a mani the other day with the Sephora color, called Already Famous. Apparently this color is “sheer pewter with medium champagne and silver glitter.” Thank goodness it didn’t have light champagne glitter; that’s just tacky.

Here it is!

already famousIt’s super pretty, isn’t it? I had a really hard time picking a color from the Sephora line. I already had the basic colors from Sally Hansen (a nude color, bright red, deep purply black, taupe), and there wasn’t a ton of selection. I finally decided on this one, even though I don’t usually wear sparkly polish. But now I’m kind of loving it.

AND, it totally worked with the Sally kit! I used the Sally Hansen base and top coats, and then just used the Sephora gel color in between. It worked exactly the same as the Sally color. And, I should add, the Sephora color goes on really nicely. It’s a good consistency, not too sticky, so it glides on thinly and is easy to work with.

I’ve used the kit probably 6 times now, and every time it just gets better. I haven’t had a salon mani since I got it! And I don’t really miss it, except for the hand massage part. And the part where you can just sit there and read while someone else does it for you. It’s incredibly convenient to be able to do it at home, though. I can decide on a whim and be done in 45 minutes or so (including the 15 minutes of soaking off, during which I do usually read).

And, I seem to be getting a good 7 – 10 days of wear out of it. At that point, my nails have grown out, and the polish looks a little banged up. No chipping or anything, just normal wear and scuffing.

True red seemed to be a trend for New Year’s. At the party we attended, several of us ladies were rockin’ hot red nails, so I took a pic. You can see my Sally mani; I’m the hand at the bottom.

Have you tried a gel system yet? Give us the deets! I’ll show you the SensatioNail color soon.

Thank you so much for this update, and for your first post about the gel kit. I was pretty sure I was going to buy one, and now that I know there are more polish options, I’m definitely going to get one!

Do you think the Sally H. Gel Kit with the strips would work with the polish too? Just cure one finger at a time? Not sure if it’s cheaper to just get the whole kit or the Strips one. Right now locally the strips one is $20. Thank you for the review! I’m going to try and save up for one myself now! :)

Good question! I suspect that the lights are the same, so they would work for both, but I can’t be certain. I don’t know exactly how big the strips light is, but maybe you could even fit two fingers in there at a time? If you try it, let us know if it works! I think if you are willing to work with the strips it could be a good investment, since even if it doesn’t work with the polish you’d still have a gel option that works for you.

    Hi Beth,

Your blog concerning the Gel Kit was just what I was looking for today. I am tired of paying big bucks to get my nails done! I’m heading to Sally’s this week to get started saving money and time.

    Thanks for the great information,
    Robin

I just want to thank you for doing both the initial and follow up review (I found the review and follow up from Framed Frosting who pointed you out as a blogger with good review and follow up on this product). I am so glad it was about the polish and not the strips. I have only recently had gel manicure and will only consider them because they don’t chip/peel. I am trying to find a more budget friendly way to do the gel manicure and it seems this may be the answer. Thanks for your invaluable 2 reviews on this product and light as it seems that now I can make a good decision about moving forward on either a kit or one that I pull together with the products o my choice. In the long run, it will be much more cost effective than going to the salon.

I just went to target and bought this gel nail kit by Sally Hansen at Target! I have yet to try it, but I’m excited to do so! Thanks for the informative blog post. Hope I love it as much as you seem to!

I used the kit for the first time last week and love it! It is very important not to get any of the base, color, or top coats on your cuticle or your skin. It is also imperative that you coat the top edge of your exposed nail (the part that you paint horizontally if that helps). Doing this minimizes chipping.
I also tried on one nail yesterday regular old wet n wild nail polish! A video on you tube says to paint your bare nails with regular polish and let them dry completely. Then put on the Sally Hansen base coat, cure it, then top coat and cure it. It looks and feels like a gel manicure and I’ve heard it doesn’t damage your nails as badly and it comes off easier! Ill let you know how long it lasts. So cheap since gel color usually costs around $10.

Great info, Kiely! I’m glad you said how you did it with the regular polish, because I tried using the base coat, then two coats of regular polish, then the top coat and it was a disaster. I’ll try your way because I’m eager to see if that lasts as long as the regular gel. Thanks for the info!

Hi, there. I know this is an old post, but I came across it in researching gel colors. I LOVE the red you are wearing (the bottom hand in the picture, correct?). Can you tell me what color that is, by any chance? I would be very appreciative as I love that red color! Thanks so much!

Hi Ashley! I’m about 95% sure that the color is the Sally Hansen “Red My Lips.” It’s a great one!
